Your organisation or business starts a Twitter account, but some time down the track, you need to change it. This post will tell you how.

Why would you need to change your Twitter username?

• Personnel may change and you want the account to revert back to the individual or remain with the organisation.
• The username is for an event, has a year in it and it’s next year, so you will need to update if from @myevent2012 to @myevent2013

1. Search Twitter to see if the username has already been taken

If the username has been taken, keeping looking for combinations that will work until one is free. Usernames are allocated on a first-in-first-served basis.

2. Go to Settings

Whenever you see a “GEARS” button, it generally indicates settings.

3. In the username box, type in the new username. Click SAVE.

It’s that simple. Changing your username means that you don’t have to start a whole new account. The people who are already following you can continue to follow you. And the tweets that you made under the previous usernam, will still be there.

I’ve seen a few Indigenous business accounts and personalities abandon accounts when a change of username would have been sufficient.

Most social media accounts don’t let you change usernames so easily. Once you choose one, you’re usually stuck with it. But Twitter usernames are easy to change if you need to.
